However, collection and processing are two different stages. To convert collected waste oil into a higher-value product, a facility needs the right combination of receiving, storage, testing, pretreatment and processing equipment. This article explains the main equipment modules required when upgrading from waste oil collection to an in-house processing facility.

Waste Oil Facility Equipment at a Glance

A complete waste oil processing facility is not simply a distillation machine. It is a connected system that controls incoming feedstock, prepares the oil for treatment, selects the appropriate processing route and keeps the finished products separated.

Facility Stage

Main Equipment

Main Purpose

Receiving

Receiving tanks, transfer pumps, strainers and sampling points

Transfer, record and inspect incoming waste oil

Storage

Segregated feedstock tanks

Prevent incompatible or different-quality oils from being mixed

Testing

Sampling tools and laboratory analysis equipment

Identify the oil type, contamination and suitable processing route

Pretreatment

Settling, filtration, sludge removal and dehydration systems

Prepare the feedstock for stable processing

Main Processing

Distillation, re-refining or oil purification equipment

Produce the selected fuel, base oil or purified oil output

Finishing

Fine filtration and optional decolorizing equipment

Improve final oil cleanliness and appearance where required

Product Handling

Finished-product tanks, pumps and sampling points

Store and transfer different output streams separately

Which Equipment Should You Consider First?

You collect waste oil but currently sell it untreated: begin with segregated storage, feedstock testing, pretreatment and one suitable processing line.

You handle stable used lubricating oil: evaluate whether the feedstock is suitable for base oil re-refining.

You collect mixed mineral waste oil: complete feedstock testing before considering a waste oil distillation system.

You mainly handle transformer, insulating or turbine oil: an oil purification system may be more appropriate than a conversion plant.

You already operate a processing line: review pretreatment, finishing, automation or capacity expansion rather than replacing the entire facility.

You operate a tire or plastic pyrolysis facility: evaluate a dedicated pyrolysis oil upgrading system.

Feedstock Control Before Processing

Equipment selection should begin with the feedstock, not with a machine catalogue. Waste engine oil, hydraulic oil, turbine oil, transformer oil and mixed industrial waste oil may look similar, but they do not necessarily belong in the same tank or processing system.

Receiving and Sampling

Incoming waste oil should be recorded and sampled before it enters the main storage system. The receiving record should identify the oil source, collection date, approximate quantity and any known contamination.

A receiving area may include a transfer pump, coarse strainer, receiving tank, sampling point and basic spill-control measures. These components allow the facility to inspect the oil before it is mixed with an existing feedstock batch.

Common incoming materials may include:

Used engine oil

Used lubricating oil

Hydraulic oil

Gear oil

Transformer or insulating oil

Turbine oil

Mixed mineral waste oil

Pyrolysis oil

These materials should not automatically be combined simply because they are all described as waste oil.

Segregated Storage

Feedstock segregation protects the value of collected oil. Used lubricating oil from a controlled source may be suitable for base oil recovery, while oil mixed with fuel, water, solvents or unrelated industrial waste may require a different treatment route.

Separate storage tanks help operators:

Maintain more consistent feedstock quality

Avoid mixing reusable oil with heavily contaminated waste

Match each batch to the appropriate processing system

Reduce unexpected changes during distillation or purification

Keep higher-value lubricant feedstock available for re-refining

A facility that mixes every incoming oil into one tank may limit its own processing and product options.

Feedstock Testing

Laboratory testing helps determine whether the oil should be distilled, re-refined, purified or handled through another route. Testing requirements depend on the oil type and the intended output.

Typical evaluation items may include:

Water content

Density

Kinematic viscosity

Flash point

Solid particles and sediment

Sludge content

Acidity

Sulfur content

Fuel dilution

Glycol or coolant contamination

Potential chlorine or halogen contamination

Unknown solvents or process chemicals

The purpose of testing is not only to describe the oil. The results affect pretreatment requirements, equipment materials, operating conditions, maintenance and final product quality.

Pretreatment Before Processing

Pretreatment removes contaminants that may interfere with the main processing system. The required configuration depends on the water, solids, sludge and composition of the incoming oil.

Pretreatment may include:

Settling

Coarse filtration

Free-water separation

Sludge removal

Controlled feedstock heating

Vacuum dehydration

Additional separation for heavily contaminated feedstock

Effective pretreatment can support more stable operation, reduce fouling and make the final output more predictable. It cannot, however, make every unknown or chemically contaminated waste stream suitable for processing.

Choose Your Processing Route

After feedstock evaluation, the processing route should be selected according to three factors: the type of oil available, the required output and the market available for the finished product.

Waste Oil to Diesel Recovery

A diesel recovery route may be considered for suitable waste engine oil and selected compatible mineral waste oils when the target is a fuel-range product.

A typical system may include:

Feedstock pretreatment

Heating and distillation equipment

Vacuum system

Fraction separation

Condensation system

Fuel collection tanks

Final filtration or optional polishing

The recovered product should normally be described as a diesel-type fuel or fuel-range fraction. Its permitted use depends on final test results, target specifications and local regulations.

Review VBOLT’s waste engine oil to diesel plant for projects based mainly on used engine oil.

Facilities collecting several compatible mineral waste oils can also evaluate a mixed waste oil distillation plant.

Used Oil Re-Refining for Base Oil

A base oil route is generally more suitable when the feedstock mainly consists of controlled and relatively consistent used lubricating oil.

This route is intended to recover lubricant base-stock fractions rather than maximize fuel production. It normally requires more precise fraction control and deeper refining than a diesel-oriented system.

Depending on the project, the equipment may include:

Feedstock dehydration

Removal of light fractions

Vacuum distillation

Thin-film or other high-vacuum separation

Base oil fraction collection

Refining and finishing

Final filtration and product storage

The output may be used as a raw material for lubricant production, subject to laboratory results and downstream buyer requirements.

Explore VBOLT’s used oil re-refining base oil equipment for projects targeting recovered base oil.

Industrial Oil Purification

Not every collected oil needs to be converted into diesel or base oil. Some industrial oils retain useful properties and mainly require removal of water, gas, particles or other contaminants.

Typical purification applications include:

Transformer oil

Insulating oil

Turbine oil

Selected industrial lubricating oils

These systems may use vacuum dehydration, degassing and fine filtration to restore suitable oil for continued use. The correct purifier depends on the oil type, contamination and required operating conditions.

Pyrolysis Oil Upgrading

Tire and plastic pyrolysis oil should be treated as a separate feedstock category. It may have different sulfur levels, acidity, solids, stability and boiling characteristics compared with used engine oil.

A pyrolysis operator should therefore evaluate a dedicated pyrolysis oil to diesel plant rather than assuming that a standard used-oil system can be applied without modification.

Not Sure Which Processing Route Fits Your Oil?

Send your oil type, monthly volume and target product. It does not replace the main distillation, re-refining or purification system.

Digital monitoring and automation may also be added to track operating conditions such as temperature, pressure, vacuum level, liquid level, flow, energy use and alarm status. These functions support plant management but do not replace feedstock classification or laboratory testing.

Not every facility needs every processing module. A collection-only operation should not install a distillation plant before feedstock volume, oil quality and downstream product demand are stable. A company with a stable waste oil supply, suitable storage, an operating site and a clear market for the final product can evaluate adding in-house processing equipment. Feedstock quantity and quality should be confirmed before the processing line is selected.

Should all collected waste oils be stored together?

No. Different oil types and contamination levels should be evaluated and stored separately where practical. Mixing controlled used lubricating oil with heavily contaminated or unknown waste may reduce its value and limit the available processing routes.

Does every waste oil facility need a distillation plant?

No. Some facilities may only need receiving, storage, pretreatment or oil purification equipment. A distillation or re-refining plant is more appropriate when the operation has sufficient feedstock, a defined target product and a reliable downstream market.

What information is required for an equipment proposal?

The main information includes oil type, source, monthly volume, contamination condition, current equipment, target output, required capacity, installation location and any available test data or samples.

Request a Waste Oil Facility Equipment Plan

Share your collected oil types, monthly volume, current equipment, target product and installation country. VBOLT will review the information and recommend a suitable facility configuration.

[Submit Project Details]

<div
