The intended product is regenerated base oil, not diesel fuel. The process must be selected for the actual used lubricating oil and the buyer's required viscosity grades. Each product fraction should be held in a segregated tank and released only after laboratory testing confirms the agreed properties and applicable Kenyan requirements.


Feedstock and Product Basis
Representative feed samples should be analyzed for water and sediment, ash, density, viscosity, flash point, distillation behavior, sulfur, total halogens, acid number, metals, glycol and other collection-route contaminants. Unknown or incompatible streams should be quarantined. Transformer oil, halogenated oil, chemical waste and water-rich emulsions require separate assessment and must not enter the feed without a specifically engineered and legally permitted treatment route.
Product targets should define the required base oil cuts and test methods. Common release checks include kinematic viscosity at 40 and 100 degrees Celsius, viscosity index, flash point, pour point, color, sulfur, acid number, carbon residue, volatility and metals. A commercial label or clear appearance is not a substitute for a certificate of analysis.
Process Configuration
A re-refining line can include feed receipt and segregation, filtration, dehydration, light-ends removal, high-vacuum distillation or fractionation, condensation into separate base oil cuts and a finishing stage selected from laboratory trials. Depending on the feed and specification, finishing may use adsorption, solvent extraction or hydrotreating; each option requires its own recovery system, material balance, utilities and safety design.

Capacity, Yield and Mass Balance
Five tonnes per day is a nominal feed-capacity basis, not a guarantee of five tonnes of saleable base oil. Sustainable throughput and product yield depend on water, solids, light fuel dilution, additive content, selected cut points, vacuum capacity, cleaning frequency and plant availability. Acceptance should use a complete mass balance that separately reports feed oil, removed water and light ends, each base oil fraction, off-spec oil, heavy residue, wastewater, gas and normal process loss.
Safety and Kenyan Compliance
The site design should address closed transfer, tank venting, pressure and vacuum protection, high-temperature and high-level trips, thermal-oil or other heating safeguards, grounding and bonding, ventilation, gas detection, fire protection and emergency response. Solvents or hydrogen, if included in the selected finishing process, require additional hazardous-area, recovery and operating controls.
The project owner is responsible for Kenyan approvals covering used-oil receipt, hazardous-waste handling, air emissions, wastewater, residue recovery or disposal, product storage, transport and fire safety. Required sampling points, emission controls and records should be confirmed with the competent authorities before installation.
Commissioning and Acceptance
Commissioning should use the documented feed envelope, calibrated instruments and stable operating conditions over an agreed test period. The acceptance report should record throughput, temperatures, vacuum, utilities, downtime and the complete mass balance. Independent laboratory results should confirm each regenerated base oil fraction against the agreed product specification.
